Mehmet Sezgin
Head of Digital Payment Systems, BBVA

Mehmet Sezgin is the head of Global Payment Systems at BBVA (Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria) and the co-chairman of Garanti Payment Systems since May 2012.
At BBVA he manages 80 million cards, 1,3 million POS terminals and more than 20 thousand ATMs globally generating $115 billion purchase volume from 13 countries (Spain, Portugal, Turkey, Romania, USA, Mexico, Chile, Argentina, Peru, Uruguay, Paraguay, Colombia and Venezuela).

Mehmet follows a strategy of meeting the retailers needs while creating more value to the cardholders. All payment systems divisions in all countries are reorganized to include issuing and acquiring under one roof. A firm believer of new technologies, Mehmet helped launching a digital wallet in Spain which reached 500.000 downloads in its first year. Recently BBVA Wallet was also launched in Chile, Mexico and USA. More countries will follow.

Before BBVA, Mehmet had worked for Garanti Bank, Turkey for 13 years. He was the founder-CEO of Garanti Payment Systems, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Bank. Mehmet launched the first chip cards in Turkey, created a loyalty platform called bonus card which is now licensed to 9 other banks. He was instrumental in moving Turkey to full chip & pin EMV infrastructure.

Garanti Payment Systems now manages 9,5 million credit, 8 million debit cards, 550 thousand POS terminals, 4 thousand ATMs and the biggest e-commerce platform in Turkey. Under Mehmet’s leadership Garanti has become the 4th largest credit card issuer in Europe based on purchase volume.

Before establishing Garanti Payment Systems, Mehmet was a Senior Area Manager for Eurasia for Europay (now MasterCard Europe), having worked for several years with banks in different capacities. He started his career as a consultant at Price Waterhouse.

He is a board member of the Interbank Card Association (BKM) and MasterCard Europe. He served as the chairman of Credit Bureau in Turkey and was the chairman of Risk Centralization Platform at Bankers’ Association.

He holds an MBA from the University of Massachusetts which he earned with a Fulbright scholorsip and Bachelor of Science in management from METU in Ankara.

He reads a lot, plays tennis and tries to enjoy warm waters in the summer at Mediterranean.
